So, what exactly is a blog?

Blogs, like this, is a way for individuals or an organisation to create posts or “blog posts” about a particular topic which are free and available for online users. These blog posts can be in the form of ideas; conveying the writer’s thoughts about a topic. They can also be in a form of discussion where readers are encourage to engage with the topic through leaving comments on the post.

As a form of communication, blogs are highly regarded as a rich source of information especially through the nature of the internet’s ever-growing community, so does the number of bloggers out there, consequently; the endless possibilities of topics that are covered. This is highly beneficial for all those who have access to the internet as they literally have an ocean of information at their fingertips. For students all across the world, this means that they have endless resources of information for their education. Researches about topics or a collaboration between teachers and students can be emphasised through the use of blogs and its ability to provide information whilst also offering the ability to discuss the posted topic.

Furthermore, blogs can also be used by organisations of any sizes; but those organisations who struggle to find traction in social media can use blogs as an avenue to boost their online footprint. From advertising to customer feedback; blogs are an ideal way for companies to show case their products and their customer’s testimonies, these are all ways in which a company or organisation can reach out and crawl their way up the social media environment (Sharma, n.d.).

What blog sites are out there?

If you want to get started with blogging, there are already a multitude of blog sites available for use out there, some free whilst others needing some sort of subscription fee. Some of the most popular blog sites being WordPress, Tumblr, Wix and Joomla to name a few. Choosing which one to use is absolutely based on personal preference and what you are looking for performance and pricing wise (Schaferhoff, 2019).

By far, WordPress is the most popular blogging site being used currently. It offers a good amount of flexibility in setting up your own blog/blog site while being competitive in pricing (if you so choose to pay), but it is also free.

In closing, blogging is definitely something that seems to be a part of the web, amongst all the memes and irrelevant things that makes up internet; a hope for internet users. A vast ocean of information; a centre of collaboration and an avenue to the social media for organisations. Blogs are a highly user-friendly way of expressing your ideas to the world.

  1. Completely agree that bloggers should encourage their audience to contribute their own thoughts through comments as it is a great way to start a discussion about a specific topic. The amount of data that is available on the internet is endless, which is a great opportunity for everyone to gather further knowledge about a particular aspect they are interested in.
